Whey hey! I want to get a prickly pear cactus! How do you get them, can you just cut some off one thats allready growing, or do you buy a baby one. See, I really havn't got a clue, but it looks like the type of thing that I could grow! Laughing Any advice please scratch

Well easy Dave, you see them growing in the wild just take a piece, as big or as small as you like, plant in ground and they grow quick, as they grow add ons break them off and re plant, even old worn out bits that fall to the ground re sprout, amazing plant, beware of the spikes they hurt lol Very Happy

My first experience with prickly pears was more than 40 years ago in Israel. Somebody told me that they were good to eat and they certainly didn't lie about that. What they neglected to tell me was that the pears are covered in tiny hair-like spines and the merest touch is enough to cover your hand with itchy barbs that are almost impossible to remove.

Prevention is best of course but if you're unlucky or clumsy enough to get spiked, rub your hands vigously with dry sand to break the spines and pull them out
